Fuge problem, Cheato in Display Tank

Hi All,

I'm a noob with the refugium. I finally got rid of the nitrate-bomb wet-dry. I've noticed cheato pieces break off and the return quite efficiently pumps them into the main tank. Is this just part of the deal with fuges, or is there a way around it?

Thanks!!

what type of return pump???

i know the mag pumps have a foam filter for the inlet to keep stuff like that out of the pump

Hey JJ,

I've had only a couple pieces make it to the main tank...over a years worth of running. How is it contained in your fuge? Maybe something to hold pieces back, yet let the water through!

"PIECES" Why are there pieces?? Is your cheato against your pump or is there a divider?

I would suggest if it already isn't this way have the pump divided from the refugium chamber. Have one piece of acrylic part way up from the bottom and then a second piece over further from down from the top going a little further past the other acrylic piece with foam in the middle.

Its in the second to last chamber, the 'pieces that have broken off filled pile up against the teeth of the baffle, and some fall over. The Cheatro si just floating in its chamber, nothing holding it down.

James, good idea, I need to put something over the inlet of the return pump.

Darkamek

The Pump is in the next chamber over, its just that some of the pieces sneak over the top of the chamber wall. Good idea with the second piece Thanks!

I appreciate all the help! Fuge Rookie I Am!

My cheato would break up so bad, I had thousands of little 1/4" pieces that would get everywhere. I eventually switched to gracillara. On the other hand, I know other people with cheato that never breaks apart. There must be different types.

Here's is a pic the day before I dropped the Cheato in. DUH, all I did was put the mesh attachement that comes with the pump on the inlet for the pump. lol. That should do it. Sometimes you just need to talk it out. Thanks RC!!
