What protein skimmer size should I get?
for a system that is approximately 80 gallons is it good to get a protein skimmer rated for a max of 300 gallons?

All of the skimmers on my tanks are rated for 2x what it is actually on. It's a plus too because when/if you upgrade down the road, you can more than likely get away without having to buy a new one.

What kind of skimmer are you looking at?? Some are vastly over rated and you may not be getting the huge cushion that you are looking for.
