I have cut the intake screen for easy maintenance plus it will not get clogged by coraline algae. I can't say the performance getting any better but i definitely like to cut my screen. FYI, any modification done to the pump will or may not be cover under warranty...

We were very lenient on covering modded pumps with the Nano stream due to known faults but the 6105 has had one defective pump out of 700+ sold worldwide and we won't be so lenient. These mods tend to result in more harm than gain, you weaken the structural integrity of the shroud when you cut away material.
