Submersible Pump Recommendations?!
Hey Guys...
Can you recommend some good submersible pumps? I working on a return for my tank. My overflow box is 700gph on a 55 gallon tank. Can you recommend a pump to match this overflow and be able to climb say, 2.5 feet (up the stand) into the tank? Thanks |

You only need roughly 5x tank turnover thru the sump. So that's 55x5=275. So your looking for a return pump that will deliver 275 gallons per hour after headloss is taken into account. Maybe a little bit more or a little less. There is a headloss calculator on the home page of Reef Central. The headloss calculator allows you to plug in your specific information and select from different pumps to meet your needs.
I would be looking at Eheim, Ocean Runner and Mag pumps for internal pumps. From those I would select the pump that fits my 275gph after headloss requirements and then I would choose the most quiet and energy efficient model that fit my criteria. Price of the pump would be my last consideration. Keep in mind that you will need additional circulation in the DT and that will most likely come from powerheads in your case. Many people oversize the return pump a little and use a ball valve or a gate valve to restrict flow. The oversized pump w/ a control valve gives you more control over flow thru the sump and would also allow you to tee off the return line and use the additional pumping power to drive media reactors or other gadgets. An oversized pump set-up improperly can overflow your Tank so careful planning is in order if you decide to go that route. |
