One of my Clowns is a bugger
I am having a problem with one of my Clowns, I have three of them, Carl, Nemo and Alex. ( my kids name all the fish, but it will actually help here ) Carl is the biggest followed by Alex then Nemo. Carl and Nemo are buddies, do everything together, Alex well Carl is a jerk to Alex, Alex stays behind the rocks and as soon as he pokes his head out Carl charges him. I just want to flick Carl he is a Pr*ck. What if anything can I do about this. I want it to stop, I want Alex to be able to swim freely and not be "afraid for his life" everytime he ventures out from behind the rocks.
Any opinions? |

I believe clowns do better in pairs. Maybe give Alex away to a local reefer, or see if your LFS will take him in on trade.

Carl is most likely a girl, or certainly on her way to becoming one. So, maybe the kids won't mind renaming it Carla? Three is a crowd in the Clown world.

Take Alex out before Carl kills him, it seems as if it is only a matter of time. Sometime 3 clowns work together but not too often.

Clowns should be kept in pairs, essentially even numbers only (2, 4, etc). Typically they will pair up, and if there is a loner remaining, they will bully him until he dies. I learned this very quickly when I added a thrid clown to my tank. I returned him to my LFS within hours because I couldn't watch the abuse he was taking lol.

What if we added another clown? would that be a better option than taking him to the LFS, we tend to get a little attached to our fish, kids especially

In nature the larger one becomes female and then there is a dominant smaller male pairing up with the female. The others remain sexless males. Agree with above. Give the third clown a chance to pair up somewhere else, otherwise I think you will continue to see the abuse and the clown will become stressed leading to death along with possibility of its stressed state making it vulnerable to parasites, thus possibly infecting other fish in your tank, IMO. A stress free tank, is a happy & healthy tank.

It is going to be hard, but I would suggest taking that one out as soon as possible. Not sure you want to have the kids watch it get killed, which has a very good chance of happening. I have seen it in person.

Another pair of Clowns in a 60 gallon tank is not a good idea. Carl(a) would probably continue to be a jerk to the second female in that size tank. Explain that Alex has to go get married and live with his wife in a different aquarium. I bet your kids will be fine with that.

Amphiprion (clownfish) are damsels, despite the nemo image.. They are very territorial and aggressive particularly toward their own kind. A 60 gallon tank is fine for a pair of the same species. It is best to get two small juveniles. One will dominate and become the female growing more than twice as large as the male. Two females will fight often to the death of one or both. Once an amphiprion becomes a female it can't become a male. A male can become a female. In nature they live in pairs, often with a third( a second male) tolerated but bullied to the periphery of their territory. If one of the pair dies the third comes in as a male either to pair with the female or with the male which will change to a female. However , in a tank three may not work even if 2 of the three are males due to the confining space.
