yeah i just made a poll you should check it out. put yourself in a 500 squar foot home and see if you like it? my 125 will be ok when he gets full grown. as he grows this is wehn i get him i will be making as much flow for him as i can so that he can really feel like hes swimming! if your in the hobby to show off fish your in it for the wrong reasons look out for the fish man. in my 125 i will only have the blue and most likely a kole and you want to have them two in a 4ft tank? the yellow should be ok but again look out for the fish please.

First let me say I am not in the hobby to show off fish (kind of a rude assumption). If I were I wouldn't be asking for educated advice . I would just do whatever I wanted. I have been told conflicting advice and am simply trying to sort it out.

I've got a yellow and a Purple in a 4' tank and they fight more then I would like. They are only about 3.5 inches long right now. The Yellow and Purple are a few inches smaller then the Hippo when they're full grown. I will be bumping this tank up in a year or two to a 180 but for the time being I have to keep an eye on them.

SO I definately cant trust some of the online stores when they give you minimum tank sizes. Are there any other tangs that could go in with a yellow and do well and be happy? I just think they are very beautiful, but if one is max than that's okay.

They were tolerating each other for the longest time but I recently put a Goby in that rearranged some sand which I believe caused one of the Tangs to start hanging out in a different part of the tank encroaching on the other tanks self proclaimed territory
Now they have tail flapping contest.

From my experience as they grow it will get worse, I'm not saying that will happen to you , just that it is what happened to me

yeah, it's like living your life in a bathroom, so living your life in a small bedroom makes it okay. truth is, most of us don't keep fish from very small to full grown in captivity anyway, and sorry to burst your bubble but that 125 is too small for a full grown blue tang. so, myself i say go for it, but when they get too big be ready to trade him, or offer him a larger tank.

I had a blue in my 150 (5' long) and I still got rid of it... too much fish for a tank that size. The yellow may due fine, but if you'd like a tang look at the Ctenochaetus genus. Kole, Tomini, Chevron... any of those should do well in your setup.

I have 3 tangs in my 24g Aquapod

jk. I got a tang for my 180 last night, and the LFS never asked me what size tank i have. I honestly think they care more about a sale..

The blue loses it's color when cooking and turns grey. Yellow is a better choice.

Eh, it's not the preferred alternative I'd say. If you want to perpetually change out the fish, then it's feasible, but you may find yourself doing so once a year or maybe even more. I had a ~1" specimen that grew to 4"+ in less than 15 months. I wouldnt say he was aggressive, but he was very active, which spooked other fish (especially during feedings).

Its kind of a touchy subject, but in alot of cases you are buying the tang at the LFS from an even smaller tank than it is going to end up in.

Yea it seems people have strong feelings about tangs, which isnt necessarily a bad thing. I'm pretty sure my lfs would sell me 3 blue hippos for a 20 gal tank and tell me they will be fine ugh
