Help Fraogspawn dying!!?>>?????
Started shrinking about a week ago around Thanksgiving. Only difference in the tank is that I started getting some cyano. Tested for phosphates and its at .5.
Nitrates were a bit high at 20ppm and PH at 8.3. Calcium is around 380. Any ideas? I was listening to ReefCast podcast about a week ago and they were talking about redbugs. I believe I might have seen one or two in the polyps. COuld this be the outcome? Anyway to save it? |

Is it right in the line of flow. These like low to med flow (lower seems even better). I had some in the past but could never keep them very long. As soon as they would get a descent size< I would loose them . Figured out my tank (with a cloosed loop) had too much flow anywhere i wanted to put it. later

I actually moved my Koralai away from it and it sits in between my return head loc lines. so basically minimum flow. But I would think the spots in the stems of the polyps tell me it's some kind of disease/ bacteria?

Salinity was low a couple of days ago at 1.019 an temp has ranged between 74-80 (room Temp). Very slow changes in temp though.
I'll test for Alk tomorrow morning. |

You shouldn't let the temp and Salinity drop that low. Temp needs to stay between 77 to 85 degrees range and the Salinity needs to be at NSW or 1.026. Have you been using a PH buffer?

I've been dosing the tank with Kalkwasser almost daily via one drip per second at about two gallons per day. But I don't get it, my PH is 8.3,isn't that almost perfect?

You're dosing kalk without an Alk test kit?
You need an ALK test kit, pronto.

It's not a reef central podcast. You can check it out at Reef Cast dot com. Reef Cast is one word together.

I know you already checked the temp, but last summer when we lost our AC and the tank temp got above 90 for a couple days (waiting for HVCA guy) we lost all our frogspawn. 2 colonies each about 8x8" wide and very healthy. They were the only corals that were affected, no fish died.

You should not waste time worring about red bugs on frogspawn, It is generally an sps related problem. I noticed with some lps corals, if there has been alot of traffic in the house near the tank it will close up a bit. Im guessing from the floor vibrating from the increase in foot traffic. This is just another possibility to look at if there is no other obvious cause.

There's also a TalkingReef Podcast that's really good (along with the ReefCast). Totally different style podcasts, both with really good info. You can download both from itunes, or you can listen to them on your computer (go to the website for either one).

I am having a similar problem with my hammerhead coral. It had closed up about a month ago and has not opened (but does have little heads growing from the sides). My salinity=1.025,Mag=1400,Alk=9DHK,Cal=400,Temp=79. I have just installed a calicum reactor(korallin 1501) about a week ago. Should I be dosing something???
Do I need some type of buffer??? Should I try to raise my ALK? Everything else in the tank is doing fine (frogspawn, zoes, blue tort...). Thanks Ed |

Also should I remove the feather dusters (I think that is what they are?). The picture is a few months old they are really growing well in the cheato and have quadrupled in amount!!!
Thanks Again Ed |
