I was wondering if anyone has done something like this?? Would putting cheato in a built in overflow box be alright?? I mean my water in my overflow area has to reach a certain height before going down. So I'd like to know if something like this is doable or just a dumb idea.

People do it and I have not heard any huge negatives. My concern is that something could happen to obstruct the drain and/or the chaeto just becomes a sink for detritus.

Anyone got some pics lol, I am thinking about doing it since my sump is too small. And the cheato will still get light since there isn't any cap over the overflow area.

Mine found its own way into the overflow. Every month or so I pull some out and it regrows.

Re: Silly Idea?? Cheato In Overflow Box??
Just set up my sump a month ago and still need a refugium. So, not commenting from experience, I'd still be worried about something making it's way to the drain, creating a blockage and a wet floor.
