Re: My 1st Reef pics

Anyhow, I just set up my first reef tank about a month ago but I've had my share of trigger tanks in the past. Never really got into the reef thing mostly because of the start up cost and time involved but now that I own my own house I figured what the hell!!! First off, my wife is 1 month away from having our first child so I really tried to save as much money as possible during the setup. I found 2 local people who were breaking down their well established tanks and picked up about 175 lbs of live rock between the two which ran me $275. One of the sellers also had some soft corals and a few fish he just gave me along with a shrimp because they had no where else to go. Tank is a 90 gallon and the hang on filter you see in the pics below is really just a temp thing!!! Tank also has a refugium below along with a protien skimmer rated for 200 gallons. The big thing that really always held me up with starting a reef was the lighting cost!!! I took a chance and purchased a fixture off of a user by the name of aquaexpress on ebay for $280. Fixture is: 2 x 250 watt HQI Halides 15k 4 x 65 watt PCs moonlights, cooling fans, etc.......... So far so good! Pics with old light New light Last edited by Lungs15; 12/20/2008 at 02:33 PM. |

Pics work great for me. Watch your clowns carefully. Normally 2 is the max in a tank that size, and the third may become the victim.

looks sweet! You got some nice corraline covered rock! I cant quite tell what the coral is in the top middle (finger leather?) You might consider moving it, along with the palys, downhill. They might burn up that close to your halides. Save that ridge for your light lovers

Just a recomendation - i'd ditch the AquaClear power head. i came home (twice) to a fish stuck to the inlet of it. $50 worth of fish to realize i should get rid of it. Just a suggestion though.

Looks very nice! I would definitely move those mushrooms down to the middle or lower part of the tank, maybe in a little shade.
