trash can's a pretty good solution, in fact the only thing I've ever used.

From a local reefer I was able to find "food grade" barrels. They include screw on lids. I believe that they were previously used to store dill pickles. I have salt water in one and the RO/ DI water in the other. I have them plumbed together making water changes and salt make up a snap. I see these listed on Craigs list from time to time. A good price is $20-25.00 / each.

Not to step on shoes, but are you sure you need ro water?
I'm still a newbie and all (1 year in), and have read many doomsday scenarios if you don't use it. I couldn't afford it at the time and kept using well water, all the while pricing ro/di units for future investment. Then I started reading a bunch of threads with people who do use ro/di water and were perplexed with their bad water conditions/ algae problems. Seems to me a lot of people jumped on the bandwagon and stated a salty couldn't be kept without ro/di. Maybe it's because I don't have a lot of corals yet or whatever, but I've been using well water for over a year now without issue. Algae hasn't been a problem. Maybe I'm lucky?

I've used cheap rubbermaid trash cans for the last six years with no issues whatsoever, I don't believe they have to be brute containers, I go through about 100+ gallons per week and like I said never a problem.

Not having algae problems does not guarantee that your water conditions are top notch either. People have learned from the experience of other hobbyists, chemists and biologists about the benefits of using ro water. Most of us experienced folks wouldn't dream of running a reef tank without one.

Why? Because of copper or other metals? I'm assuming my snails and shrimp wouldn't have lasted this long if that was the case. Maybe I'm lucky?

The food grade barrels are the one that I use...one for RO and the other one for salt with a pump and heater.
