Unhappy Nitrate spike

My skimmer overflowed the other day after being 3/4 full of some nasty stuff. I did a 15 gallon water change afterwards and checked my Nitrate this morning and it's at 70! I've lost one Acro which didn't seem healthy but I'm getting 21 SPS frags sometime this week or next week.

I'm dosing Vodka, but I am still in the early stages. I'm planing to keep doing Vodka and 15 gallon water changes every 2nd day. How does that sound? Should I do anything else?

A thirty gal water change will remove nitrate much faster than two 15's an if mixed properly and temp matched will cause no problems.

Agreed, larger water changes. 15g on your system is 12.5%, so each change is only going to remove 12.5% of the nitrate. The first change will lower it from 70 to about 61, the next from 61 to 53.6, etc.

searching the forms and I think I really had a perfect storm for a Nitrate spike.

1 - Skimmer Overflow
2 - CBB died (body in tank for 24-30 hrs)
3 - New Sleeper Goby stiring up sand bed

Edit - Thanks for the Math Lobster. I'll pick up another Brute today and start on the changes.

How much is too much? 30 gallons every 2nd day or would 30 gallons daily be better?

I did a series of 6 or so 50% water changes on my tank every week.

As lond as parameters are matched no harm will come from 50% daily
