Bad News:(

Last night I looked at my aquarium thermo and we had a power surge and my aquariums temp hit 91'F. I have cooled it down and my shrimp died but everything is acting normal. But the water is cloudy.

you need to do a water change. What kinds of corals did you have? They very likely bleached...and the cloudy water can be due to death or even possibly an "emergency" spawn from something, often when some animals are put under extreme stress like high temperatures and risk of death they may suddenly spawn as a way to some how still survive. What else did you have in your tank? Any sea apples or cucumbers can be toxic and may have released something into your system.

Power surge? That sounds like an unlikely cause. More likely your heater got stuck on. Replace that heater with two smaller heaters so that one stuck can't heat the tank on it's own.

Agree. Likely a broken heater. When they fail, they usually remain on.

And if you want to sleep and night and care about your animals, run your heater off a ranco controller. All heaters seem to fail in the on position.

It sounds like a possible heater failure to me too. I also agree on the multiple smaller heaters as opposed to 1 large heater. I would recommend splitting them between the sump and the DT to give some heat to the DT in the event the return pump were to fail. A tank controller or a temp controller like the Ranco is a wise investment.

i love those little crap 100-150w heaters. 4 or 5 is perfect for a 100gal system. collectively they are mint and once they get settled down, stay solid at wherever they settled down to. heh

every heater i have ever owned eventually crapped out, even my awesome ebo, so i'm going with the setp that doesn't cripple the whole operation if a heater quits.

if one dies or runs away: no difference. i had 4, but lost one. 3 cant keep it at 80ΒΊ now during winter, so i have to get another couple

I use one of these, the tank is just outside my bedroom door so it wakes me up just fine.

http://www.marinedepot.com/ps_viewit...te=google_base

It comes pre-set to go off if the temp goes below 75 or above 82. I set my heaters to stay between 77-80, barring a power outage i should be set

Wow it gets some pretty harsh reviews (i just went and read them). Sometimes you have to wonder about people...this thing is as accurate as i would expect for a $20 thermometer. Its off by about 1/2 degree compared against a LifeGuard unit (which i had to replace because the LCD display crapped out after 3 days) and two floating glass thermometers.

I hope it never catches on, I like having the oldest tank on here and I don't have to worry about calcification, bio pellets, Vodka dosing, DSBs, Chaetomorpha (I don't even know what that is) Carbonite hardness and all of these other things many people worry about.

If I had to think about all of that stuff I would get a stroke.
My test kit came in a wooden box and the directions say to keep in a cool chariott.
I throw some food in the tank, wave hello to the fish and go out with my wife and have a nice glass of merlot with dinner.
Have a great day but most of all, have fun.

get a new heater, a quality one, this is not the place to save money. get the best you can.

next, the cloudiness is caused by a bacterial bloom. the water will soon be anaerobic and stuff will start dying. try to get as much air in the tank as possible. if you have an air pump, get that going with an air stone. remove any glass tops, and make sure your skimmer is on. if you dont get as much air in there as possible things wont be able to breath. the least efficient breathers will die first, which includes corals, then shrimp and crabs, then fish.

I feel for you. I had THREE heaters fail recently, two in the off position, and one with the light on, but not heating, all at once. They were considered to be "quality" heaters, all on a controller. The moral here is that all heaters fail, controller or not, "high quality" or not.

Maybe the next step after replacing your heater with one or more heaters, might be a audible alarm, or something that will contact you in the event of a temperature spike or drop.

Good luck getting everything back on track, and I'm sorry for the loss of your shrimp.
