Head Loss Calc? Return Pump?

So can anyone explain the headloss calc to me as far as what it outputs to you?

Total losses are 4 feet of head pressure, or 1.73 PSI. with a flow rate of 0 GPH.<-- the flow rate thing I am assumping how much flow is lost, its not the flow being output lol.

And also what should I get for a return pump for a 40g?

I am assuming something that will provide 400-800gph after all the bends in the to and from piping...

I think there used to be a head loss calc either on the front page of nano-reef.com or the front page of this site. Most pumps either on the package or on a web site have a chart that show you head loss for a particular pump. As for a return on a 40 gal, its not based on the size of the tank its based on how much GPH your over flow can handle, you can go as far under the gph of your drains but when you exceed it you get a flood in your display, the more over your are the faster you get the flood, which makes it dangerous because if you're just a little over it may take hours or even days till you realize there is a problem. Welcome to the Hobby and welcome to reef central (a very mixed blessing) try hard to find a local reef club, often you'll get more help and hook ups you just cant get on a huge site like this.

yea I saw the calc on the front page that is what I am asking about.... I want to know what its output actually means, mainly the flow rate. It looks like its showing lost flow rate but I'm not sure.

But thank you for the welcome

edit: i guess its actually how much will be coming out of the outlets

Here's a link I found invaluable while trying to figure this out for myself. Hope it helps!

the end result of that calculator on the front page is what the flow rate will be after head loss.
