hairy mushrooms hostil takeover
My tank has been running for 20 months,When i started i had maybe 10 hairy mushrooms, now im up to an incredible 30.They are very large the biggest being 6'' across. They have started crowding my star polyps and a few other things.I have read that if you cut them they just regrow so how do i get them off the areas i don't want them?

buy a maxi-jet 1200, and use the sucker cups that come with it, install the maxi-jet down in the tank and point it directly at the mushrooms, they will shrivell up and eventually let go of the rock to find a new less agressive flow area in the tank, when they do this they will float around the tank and you can net them out, this is a method i found worked for me when i needed to move mushrooms

Another method is to set a loose, fairly light rock generally atop them, not crushing them. They'll climb it to get to the light, and you can take that rock away, sell/trade it, and install another rock.
If you can get them to turn loose entirely, use a light rubber band to hold them to a fragment of old coral/rock and again, there will be takers. You're doing something right! Happy mushrooms are a good thing.

I glue a piece of small tile on top of it to make it move.
I've also considered putting weed block when they were stining my other corals ;-) |

I make a paste out of Mrs. Wages and then pipe it onto the mushroom with a plastic syringe. Also shoot them in the mouth with it.Leave it there for 10-15 minutes with the powerheads OFF.Then I turn the PHs on and blow the residual off with a turkey baster. They'll die and melt away in about 24 hrs.
The foot may grow back so be ready to cover that also later on. Dont do too many at once as in small tanks the PH could rise from the kalk.

+1 as this being the most successful for me. Take a joe's juice like mixture (salt, water, kalk - heated and mixed) and go right for the mouth. Be warned that if you miss the mouth, you may end up splitting them.

I just shove rocks or tiles under the edges of the rock and as they move to the new rock/tile, I trade/sell them to my local reef club or take them into the fish store and get some store credit, dang I have even given them away for free. I have about 10 in my tank waiting to be moved out right now.

Or you can pull the rock, chisel at the base where the shrooms are and get them off clean with a little rubble attached. Then glue them down to a rock and trade them in. (or throw away).

That's a good idea. Unfotunately for me, these invasive shrooms keep popping up on rocks with my nicer corals attached. Or in areas that are very difficult to access certain rocks. That's why I'm trying to contain them.
