masonary bit neccessary for drilling rock?
Hey, is a masonary bit neccessary for drilling through rock in order to put pvc through? I have some steel bits and was wondering if they would work just as well?

I actually just drilled a bunch of rock for my new tank and bought a masonry bit to install some pipes.
I used some normal bits to start the holes and found a sharp drill bit works better than the $15 masonry bit I just bought. So to answer your question... NO =) |

normal bits will work they can just burn up quicker. Would help if you had a hammer drill or adjustable speed drill to slow the bit down

They work, however, you'll wear them out in a few runs.........no harm if you go cheap though.

Depending on the type of rocks you're drilling... if you're drilling fiji type rocks, no you don't need masonry bits... I would also stay away from using a hammer drill on these rocks as the rock will probably break before you're done. Standard bits and a regular drill will work.
