T-5 Lighting Woes.

I used to have these Coralife T5 lights. There were three fixtures on top of my 40B reef tank. After a while, the bulbs started to wear out. I noticed that my corals weren't doing as good. It was then that I got this offer that I couldn't refuse. I received six bulb: (3) 15,000K 36" SPS T5HO's and (3) 36" SPS True Actinics for $10. I replaced all the lights and thought, "That oughtta hold 'em for a while!" Well, after that my corals still didn't do so good and things kept getting worse. I lost a Galaxia, a nice Hammer Coral and my Colt coral went into mega-decline. Then this past week I aquired a 36" Coralife PowerCompact fixture with 2 50/50 bulbs in it. I put brand new bulbs in it and kept one of the T5's going with just the actinics in it. My stupid question is this: Was I not getting the right light spectrum from the T5HO's because I had them in a standard fixture (i.e. one that wasn't designed for the HO's)? I am seeing a vast and substantial improvement in the tank. Everything is opened up again, all is well! What a difference! By the way, the fish never got sick or anything and the SPS bulbs were brand spankin' new. Thanks.
