salt mix
I read on here that most of you guys mix your salt days in advance, and run air through it. Why is this better?
At the min all i do is heat mine in a microwave to get it too temp then mix salt wait 15 mins then add to tank. Am i doing something bad by doing this??/ Thanks |

you really should mix your salt and let it sit over night with a power head and heater on it for it to properly mix. TEMP matching iS KEY

Some of the reasons for mixing in advance are:
- to let the salt mix completely and the water to stabilize - allow time for the water temp to be raised to the exact tank temp - aeration to raise the o2 level because the water can become very low in o2 sitting in the pipes from the water company here is an article you can read with more info... http://reefkeeping.com/issues/2007-11/nftt/index.php

I wish I could find the link, but I think the answer is also to "gas off" the water to allow carbon dioxide to escape, which affects the pH of the water...
