New tank lighting
I'm being told that I don't have adequate lighting (standard aquarium strip light) to keep live rock with coraline algae alive.
If this is so can I buy a better bulb or do I need to take the plunge into expensive high end lighting fixtures? 29 gal tank not interested in corals at this point. What are my options? BTW this site rocks, you guys are great and extremely fast with answers to my many questions. Thanks!!! |

The live rock will be fine, it's the coraline that won't grow without adequate lighting.

I difficult question to answer, much depends upon how much money you want to spend. I think fish and corals both look much better under a combination of metal halide and actinic bulbs, but cost is a factor. I'ld add a 150 watt 14K MH if you can afford the price, you will be amazed at how much better your tank looks.

Metal halide and T5 are the most debated...
T5 is cheaper for the fixture and doesn't get as hot as metal halide. I would go with t5 if you want to keep cost down. If your not too worried about price, Buy MH & a Nano Chiller. |
