About to buy a new skimmer, need some opinons
Its come down to either an Aqua C Remora or the Octopus BH-100F. My main concern is the noise, I need a skimmer that isn't going to make much noise. I had the Red Sea Prizm and once I got it set up sent it back because of how loud it is. The tank its going on is going to be a 20 gallon long.

You will need to make a silencer for either skimmer as the air hose is going to be loud on either. I haven't used either skimmer so have no suggestions there.
Sending the Prizm back was the best thing you could have done.

The Tunze 9002 Nano skimmer is pretty quiet and skims like a champion I'd recommend it , but make sure it can be submerged at least 7-3/4 " .

since he is looking into a hob skimmer i dont think the tunze would work. but the remora will be the loudest one of the 2 you had up there. and the abad side is you cant quiet it down much because of the type of injection it is using. but honestly i didnt like mine anyways. the octopus would be a better bet, but make sure you buy another pump as they tend to break down after some time. another one you could look into that has a better pump and not much more is this one:

I'll have to look into it more. I haven't had a skimmer on my tank for about a month since I had to return the Prizm. But I guess you basically have to have one, right? I don't want to take many short cuts, but if I get one thats really loud again I think I'd return it. This tank is in my room, so loud sucking noises aren't my favorite thing.

My AquaC Remora I had was pretty loud. I stuck some wet paper towel under the collection cup and that helped out. I have a Tunze 9002 and it is extremely quiet. It's not hang on the back, but it is really small and the magnet can hold it in place in the corner of your tank.

i dont think you have to have a skimmer. I ran a successful 29 gallon tank for five years with no skimmer it was mainly softies and macro. there is a thread in the nano forum about a skimmerless 40 you should look into. i dont think very highly of my aqua c though it does have its moments. i also do the paper towel trick. i also tried the airline tubing around the plastic, but i find the paper towel is more effective. Water changes are the best way to maintain water quality. some mechanical filtration to pull out the big gunk and good water movement, maybe some carbon...theres no right way really.
