A sump question
Would there be a huge problem if I had a 55 gallon sump for my 36 gallon tank and just used all my 36 gallon equipment or do i need to buy more because of the increase in gallons?

I think you'll be fine
what equipment are you talking about? If you're making baffles just make sure it works best for your skimmer and other equipment.

There are a couple of things to keep in mind:
1st - Go for it ! - more volume = more stability 2nd - Another heater may be needed. Multiple smaller heaters are better, so keep yours & add another. They tend to fail in the "on" position. This will keep them from "cooking" the tank quickly in the event of a failure. 3rd - Do you have a skimmer? If so, it may need an upgrade down the road but if your bio-load is fairly light you can get by for now. |

ahhhhhh id personally do this.
-take my time with planing this...taking time with SW fish tanks is a good thing. -use the 55g as a display and move your 36 down as a sump... (its easyer to fit a smaller tank under a bigger tank than the other way around) -your fish will be much happier with more room to swim if you want to keep the 36 as a display due to the fact that youve beought lighting and everything for it thats fine too. like someone said above me id use 2 heathers that are smaller, and upgrade the skimmer.

There's a guy here on RC who has a 15 gallon tank in his bathroom and a 150 gallon sump in the basement.

a little bit update on my situation. I currently have a coralife super skimmer 65G its currently setup as HOB hoping to put it in the tank if not then have it be hob is fine.
I have three reasons why I want to use the 36 gallon as the DT I have a pretty strong light already for my 36 gallon. This could however go on top of the 55 but would only cover a small part of it. Have a canopy that is being made for the tank. Not to mention the 36 is a bow so I'm assuming making a sump out of a bow is a huge pain. The last and probably the more important reason I want to build a stand specifically for this setup. So if my siphon to the sump is clog or whatever and the 55 gallon overflows the 36 I want to put "drains" around the boarder of the 36 gallon to flow back into the sump. Kind of like a zero edge type thing. Tell me what you guys think of my reasoning. |
