Water Height in Sump for Skimmer

I'm setting up a new sump, with a new to me skimmer I got from a fellow reefer. It's an Octo NW150. I was wondering what is the optimum water height for the skimmer to work. I know you usually just set the baffle higher and then set the skimmer on a stand/egg crate to control that. My problem is I am height limited because of my stand, so I only have a couple extra inches to work with. I will be setting the skimmer on the bottom of the sump. Getting ready to go to the glass store and have my baffles cut.
