Ball valve on drain to sump

Is it necessary to have a ball valve on the drain? I am putting one on the return but have seen threads saying its not necessary on the drain.

IMO, I would not use a ball valve on the drain. You would be taking a chance on a snail plugging it up and overflowing your display.

It's not necessary, but it gives you the option of changing the amount of flow to the tank. And sometimes it makes noise because there is too much air in the line, which you can alleviate if you have a valve on it.

I was going to put one before the input to the fuge to regulate the flow thru there

I do have a ball valve on the drain, but it is full open all the time. I just consider it an emergency lever in case i need it. I also have a ball valve on the inlet to the fuge, which controls the amount of water flow there.

I don't have one on mine. I did when I originally built it with flexible hose, but when I went PVC I forgot to add it. I haven't found myself wishing I remembered so far.

Be sure to put a...(forgot what it's called)...screw on union on all of your PVC parts. I have one just after my overflow on my system. If you are using PVC on your return you'll want to put one just after your return pump and maybe just before the return nozzle on the back of the tank.
