Exclamation New Naso Tang Looks Sick Help

I picked up a Naso Tang last night from my LFS and took about hour and a half to aclimate him. Once he was in the tank he stared to eat and was doing really well. Well i woke up this morning and couldnt find him. He was inbetween two rocks not moving still breathing just not moving. I gave him a little nudge and he came out swam around then went back under the rocks and kind of just fell over onto his side. He swam between two rocks and is leaning against one and isnt moving i had to leave him since i had to come to work. all of my levels are good. salinity is 1.026 no amonia no nitrates or nitrites. Is there something i did wrong when aclimating him should i have taken longer? I dont want to see him die but he just doesnt look good any suggestions??

It doesn't sound good. There isn't much you can do at this point except wait it out. A Naso tang, however, is going to be way too large to live in a 60 gallon tank, so if it does survive, I'd be thinking about adopting it out to a bigger tank.

I have a coral beauty, two black percula clowns, 3 green chromis, fire goby, pygmy angel, checkered goby, red lip blenny and a anthias that i got last night also. The anthias is doing great. They didnt have the naso under any light and i have a 250 wat 14k llight on the 60 gallon would that stress him? I ran them all by the LFS and he said they would be fine with the tang. Hes the only tang in the tank.

That's a HUGE bioload for a 60 gallon tank. I disagree with the LFS employee who told you that a Naso could fit ever in a 60 gallon tank. The minimum tank size for that fish is 125 gallons or larger.

From the above ^^^ , did you get all these fish last night or just the anthias?

Either way, that's alot of fish for a 60 gallon.

Hehe, Joey beat me to it.

We discussed that they get big and need a bigger tank but i feel that my LFS knows what hes talking about. Hes never driven anyone in the wrong direction and wouldnt sell the fish to me knowing all that i told him. And possibly putting the fish at risk. I have a HUGE skimmer on the tank. Its a double back pack that pulls a lot out of the tank i empty the containers daily.

No just the anthias last night. but if its a huge load for the tank wouldnt my levels be up?? because they are not all zero for nitrates amonia and nitrites. PH is a steady 8.0.

The naso is about 4-5" long. Just doesnt make sense he was great last night in the tank eating and swimming around then all of a sudden over night. He just wont move. stays under the rock and leans against the rock hes near.

Still have to agree with joey, way too many fish for that tank and will be a large bioload, if not now, in the future. Might have a disease as well, that is why QT is a must for all new comers to any tank..

Don't feel bad. In the early 1990s, (before the internet,) my trusty LFS guy sold me a Sohal Tang, Emperor Angel, Pink Square Anthias, Dog Face Puffer, Yellow Tang, Purple Tang and Copperband Butterfly for my 55 gallon tank. Amazingly enough, I kept them all alive for years....

All we can do is offer advice based on the experience of thousands of reef keepers. I'd suggest doing some research on RC for people's experience keeping large bioloads and Naso Tangs in particular in small tanks. My advice would be to not replace the tang with another if it dies. You can do what you wish, but the experience of many says it will not work in the long run.

if he does die what kind of tang should i get thats suitable for that size tank?

I agree. It's very tough to watch a fish die and not be able to do anything about it.

There are some (the Tang Nazis or Tang Police) who say no tang should be kept in a 60 gallon tank, but frankly, I and many others have successfully kept small Yellow or Purple tangs for years in smaller tanks. If they get too large, they can be adopted out.

Tang or not, you might want to wait a while before adding another fish given the large bioload you have.

Coral Beauty angels are hit and miss in a reef tank, as they might pick on your corals. Flame angels can be jumpers, so the tank should have a cover. Dwarf angels in general don't get along well in the same tank.

Way too big. 150 gallon tank is the minimum needed.

believe it or not the coral beauty is leaving the corals alone in my tank. I also hang some red and brown algae in the tank she eats that mostly and frozen food i feed.

I've had a CB angel for many years. It ate only flakes and never bothered my SPS or softies. It's always a bit of a toss-up with some fish as to whether they'll be a problem.
