Why are you doing this
I just need to know why some of you are doing this hobby.
Because Iv'e met some people who are just going along with the fact that it will make thier house more pleasent And then Iv'e met some people who love ocean life and just need to look at them all day. Or are you going to do experements on the critters you buy. If you are number 1 or 3 you are just monsters on this planet, And if you all are woundfering I'm 2 because ive loved the oceans for my hole life. MONSTERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |

I have loved the ocean all my life and love having a little piece of it to look at every day. I like learning new things, including how to keep all aspects of my little piece of the ocean thriving. I think most people on this forum feel similarly are serious about learning and keeping their tanks in good condition. I've never seen one post on here indicating that they keep tanks for the third reason you mentioned. Actually, the third suggestion is a bit offensive and you may get some negative comments about it...

IMO, this does not seem like a genuine request for info, but a basis for a rant about hobbyists. I'll simply reply that my reasons are not listed among your "choices".

Wow, pretty harsh rant.
I'm sure that most of us get into this hobby just trying to do the right thing. Also I believe that if you love the ocean then you believe you are also making your house more apealing. If not to everybody, then just for yourself and your personal taste. You really can't make a judjment about a fellow reefer if they say they want a tank that will look great and make their living space a little more exciting. They probbly tank the best care of their tank & fish because if you neglect your tank for long it just turns to crap. So honestly I don't think you could set up a tank for love of the ocean and its inhabitants without kinda also wanting to making their place look nice. So if I'm a #2 guy I'm also a option #1 guy too. As for option #3 you will rarly hear about a person whos hobby it is it to play games and torture their fish! If you do...wave the red flag and the tang poliece will get him!

get off this forum. theres no room for people like you on here. run experiments on our own pets? you sound like one of those sick people who likes to think they are better than everyone because they love animals....while inevitably thinking youre the only one out there. tell you what. go in a dog forum and see if any of those people run experiments on their pets. get a life. the people on here spend hard earned money totake these pets from a fish store that doesnt always treat them well and put them in a happy tank. id seriously walk off a cliff if i were you. the world would be a much happier and loving place without your presence or attitude.

Wow, this thread was crapped on pretty quickly.
To answer your question... I grew up on the water. During the winter I'd go fishing every weekend, and during the summer I would go fishing daily. It was just my thing... As I got older I kind of stopped fishing (Who the hell knows why, I still love it) and instead focused on creating my own ocean. If I'm home, I'm either reading RC/N-R or staring at my tank. |

None of the above. I like to leave the lid off for random fresh home grown cat treats.

My reasons include relaxation, an appreciation of unique life forms, an interest in learning more about them, and a desire to experiment with aquarium design.
I do NOT experiment with my tank inhabitants, as they refuse to follow instructions. |

grand reef1 - Wow did you ask for it. I have been reading on this forum for almost a year now and it seems to me that 99.999% of all the people that post here are very concerned for their fishes and animals well being. When most buy SW inhabitants, they feel that they are saving them.

Also the third choice involving "experimentation"... A lot of what can be technically considered experimentation has advanced the hobby to a significant extent. Everything had to be tried and tested at least once before it succeeded, so IMHO the third choice (all be it a case of semantics) isn't all that bad. I don't plan on answering your question because I think the reason is irrelevant. As it's been stated, most people who use the site are trying to better their husbandry methods and improve their situation, so as long as we work with a common goal in mind our inspiration is a rather useless bit of information. I don't think this thread was intended to cause such an uproar, I think it just used an unfortunate choice of words and tone. At least the author realizes what the site is about now (hopefully) and be a little more careful in their choice of posts in the future. |

Interesting! a little self reflection? I took a look at your posts. Your first post on 2-20-09 says your saving for a 46gal and looking for advice. Then only two days later on 2-22-09 when asking about anemones your tank is a year old 46 gal tank ???????? |
