Question Cycling my tank

Ok, so here's the deal...about a year and a half ago I went to Florida on vacation. I thought I had a reliable person taking care of my tank, to my surprise I came home to a hopelessly dying tank so to make a long story short, I am now cycling my tank, it has been running for almost a month now. The skimmer is now slowing way down (from filling the cup in about an hour to now only filling about 1/4 of the way in several weeks.

So, I guess my question is, about how much longer do I need to cycle? I haven't tested the water yet as I don't have a home test kit but does it need to cycle as long as the first time?

You need to test for ammonia. When the ammonia is gone you should get a diatom outbreak. Thats the cycle end.

I'm thinking the tank will take closer to 5 or 6 months. thats about the normal time. a deep sand bed will also help it cycle faster. hope this helps.

How big is the tank? Do you have any live rock? There are alot of variable not mentioned, when I cycled my tank I never received a diatom break out. Just depends on nature and what is "starting" your cycle. Amm at 0ppm and nitrates<10 are a good start but not always a true indicator. Patience is key, everytank is different. Good Luck
