Reef-safe Rock?

I saw this rock at the petstore (NOT lfs). It was curricular with a hole in the middle, Whitish in color, and Very pours. It was also on the heavy side.
Not what I saw, but its Very similar

Is that Marine/reef safe?

should be, but has it come into contact with contaminates?

what is it made of?

might be best just to buy some base rock whole sale if you want to save money, or if it is purely astetic, make your rock the garf way.

I really like that. Is it actually rock, or something synthetic made to look like rock?

I dont know what its made of. The tag just said "Marine decor Rock".
The guy in the fish department didnt know much about it, aside that it stains Very easily. (He had treated a quarantined Freshwater fish for ick while the rock was present. Its now a permanent bright blue)

That sucks! It would really make aquascaping so much easier. I'm not creative at all, but something like this would make my tank look great.

Is it ok for bacteria and other inhabitants that usually live in live rock?

If it says MArine it should be fine.
If it is a porus as it looks it will grow bacteria

Sometimes the smaller pieces let you make cooler caves and such.
Also dont use just this. Also use some live rock to seed

I've got about 120lbs. of live rock in my 90, but i'm getting a 125 this weekend. I'll seed with some of the choice pieces I have and sell what I don't use.

Do you like it? Have you had any complaints about it?

I like it because its a big money saver. It does take some time though for it to become "live" so if you have patience you can seed your old rock and eventually will be. I also like the fact that it has so many nooks and grooves everywhere. I ordered it from my LFS in a 40lb box

Click the red house, I have a video of my tank with the rock in there..

I believe it was around 50 something bucks.. IMO its a huge $$ saver..Every last penny is worth it in the hobby, and if it means more longer waiting and patience then so be it.

I took 3 boxes.. and all the pieces were really nice anywhere ranging from football to softball sizes. The kind I have was from Carib Sea

That's a good price. I'm going to have to take a trip to the pet store to take a look at some. It looks really nice in your tank!

I just dont know what its made of. I've read the volcanic rock can be harmful for a reef tank. I'll ask next time Im at the lfs what it is.

You need to find out whats it's made of. I wouldn't just go putting anything into my tank, but if it's a real type of marine rock, or just ceramic based, you will be good with it. It looks awesome, but any "dead" rock will take a while to become seeded with regular "live rock" inhabitants.

If it isn't from south seas odds are it could be tufa rock as lots of it is dug up from quaries and used in aquariums. Much of the tufa rock is actually composed of the remains of ancient reefs long gone and is fine to use.
