Coraline Die off

So i added a 175w 15k metal halide to my tank (10 gallon, I know, I know) in the summer months. Since then, most of my Coraline algae has died off, with the exception of areas of the tank which are a bit more shady. I can't stand the look of the white rocks, but the corals love all the light. I started to add purpe up last week and i hope this helps. My Calcium levels have remained unchanged since i added the lights, so that isn't the problem at all.

Has this happened to anyone else, and is there anything else I can do?

Coraline doesn't like high light levels, so that's no surprise.

Purple Up is a complete waste of money....

Raise the light, i think its too bright and your bleaching the coraline. Did you acclimate the tank tot he light?

Anyway. Good to know, I have seen similar tanks that have Coraline covered rocks, so is there anything I can do?

Oh, didn't see that other post. Yes, I acclimated over a period of 12 days, adding and hour a day. Thanks I will raise the light up about 4/5 inches?

Right click on the picture and go to properties. It will show you the link to the picture.

What kind of lighting did you have before? I dont mean leaving the light on for a shorter period of time. If this MH is much brighter than you old light you need to start it higher. You may want to try like a foot above tank. Then you can lower an inch every 5 days or so. Another way is to use some screens from a window. Layer 3 or 4 on top of the tank and every week take one off.
You may need to leave the light a foot above the tank. Ex: If your buying a frag from a tank with the same light but much deeper. This frag may need to be acclimated to your light. the 10g is only 12 inches tall, the frag may need to be further away from the light or it will bleach.

Yeah, that metal halide is a lot stronger than the light i had before. Fortunately, i haven't had any bleaching problems, other than the algae. The lights been on there for about 5 months, so I don't have to worry about acclimation too much do I? I do wanna raise it up though, will this help the Coraline come back?

OHHHHH well you didnt say 5 months. You said "so i added" to me that means today or yesterday. If the kight has been there for 5 months there shouldnt be a need to move it up.

I would stop the purple up though. I also heard its crap.
Are your MH bulbs only 5 months old also?

Haha, sorry, i added it in the summer, my bad, should have been more clear on that one. No, the light bulb was a few months old when i got it from a friend. I bought a new one at Christmas time. So the bulb on there now is 3 months old. I believe its a 15K XM mogul based bulb.

So there is something i realized. A few months ago I switched from a 15k XM to a 20K XM, but I didn't really acclimate at all. do you think that wuld have something to do with my die off?

I doubled my lighting and alot of me coralline bleached - but it's slowly been coming back. You haven't noticed any new growth since the new light?
