Tunze Stream 6100 vs. Vortech MP 40
I am trying to choose between these 2 to simulate waves in my 125g reef tank. Which one would you buy and why?

Are you buying used? The 6100 is a couple of generations old, and the MP40 has been replaced by the MP40W.

Yea most likely I would buy used. If I can find used versions of the updated items then I would go with the updated item. Are there some features or advantages that the Tunze have over the Vortechs?

Tunzes make less noise and have more "punch" to them.

I would say the one thing i like better with the tunze is that you can face them in more directions then the vortech.

I've had good luck with my Tunze so far.
Can't speak to the Vortech though. |

I use two MP40w's in my 75 gallon reef, and I can guarantee you'll love the wave they'll make in a 125 gallon! Short pulse mode on a 125 gallon would look absolutely amazing. A friend of mine uses Tunze pumps on his 210 gallon to simulate waves, and it looks pretty good as well. I'm pretty sure you'll like the vortech waves better though.

I'm running a Vortech on either side of my 6' long tank. I feel like 6' is too far for them. They'd work better on a 4' long tank. They're also too noisy as they wind up and down. I can hear them over the fans. I plan to set them on the back glass pointing forward on the far ends. I'll then place two of the newer Tunzes pumps above them pointing towards the center of the tank. The Tunzes will be on a controller. The Vortechs will run a constant speed to reduce noise.

Best bang-for-the buck would be the Tunze stream IMO. The used 6100's can be had for about less than $200 now... and if you get tired of it, you can always use it for a DIY wavebox
Less noise, better value, tried-and-true reliability, and exceptional customer service.
