Question whats this tapping sound

Hey everybody, I keep hearing a tap, tap, tapping sound in my tank. It sounds like im using a coin to knock on the glass, I dont see anything, I can tell you that I just bought some new live rock. Possible hitch hiker?

Could your pump have picked something up, or broke a blade?

Possibly a pistol shrimp as a hitchhiker. They make a loud clicking noise.

I dont think so, because I can isolate the tapping, and its definitely inside the main tank, on the right hand side. But thanks for replying.

I dont think its my pump I should say, will the mantis or pistol shrimp be good for my reef tank, or should I try to get it out?

If they are only isolated single clicks it is probably a pistol shrimp. If you ever hear rapid multiple clicks it is a mantis.

If it's a mantis (I've tried everything) positively identify what rock he is in, remove the rock into a water change bin with SW in it, and he should jump out of the rock. Alternatively you can just leave the rock in the garage in the garage overnite but anything living on the rock will die.

I have had either a pistol or small matis ship living in my rock since I bought my very first batch of live rock, like 8 or9 years ago. I have only seen him 2 times in all that time. once the first week my original tank was set up, and a second time a few years ago. He is deep in the rocks somewhere, I hear him every day, either at feeding time, or when shortly after the lights go out

I think I have also had a mantis or pistol in my Aquapod since I set it up two years ago. After lights out I hear a clicking noise, sometimes 3 in a row. He must be a small one since I never see him and nothing, including snails have came up missing.

So good luck, maybe its just one of them little hitchhikers that you'll never see just hear.

Yeah exactly, its like two or three clicks in a row, but I can hear that guy from two rooms away, I dont really mind the noise as long as its not going to hurt, kill, or eat anything. Thanks for responding.

^^^I have that same clicking sound in my aquapod 24, I think it has something to do with that plastic wall in the back. It sort of stopped when I replaced my return pump with a maxi-jet 1200. We should ask more aquapod owners if they hear the same thing. Anyway, the tapping sound the OP is describing sounds like a mantis. just my .02 cents

I have a pistol shrimp and a shrimp goby pair and the pistol hasn't hurt any of my fish or snails. I don't have any crabs so I can't say about them. I believe that they both will eat crabs. I know that mantis shrimps do but not sure on pistols.

Pistol shrimps are OK - used to have one in my 150-g but a mantis will be a whole different thing altogether.

They will hunt down your snails and fishes...!! If it's a 'click...click...click' the chances are it's a pistol but if it goes 'click, chick, click...click...click, click, click, click' then the chances are it's a mantis at work!!

Also does the clicking sound come one at night (after the lights are out)??

I hate mantis shrimp. I had one a while back and luckily it only took me one night and some cleaver trickery to get him out.

If it's a mantis, get him out. Depending on the mantis they will take down fish, snails, crabs, what ever they can.

Yes mostly at night after the lights are out, but sometimes during the day as well. The clicking is usually 4 clicks or under. Thanks for the pics. That thing looks like my ex, nasty!
