New Vortech MP10!!!
link removed Well what is this? Ecotech Marine has a new pump being offered, the MP10. The MP10 Vortech propeller pump is the smallest pump in the MP lineup. The MP10 is rated for tanks from 2.5 to 50 gallons while pushing water from 500 to 1,575 gallons per hour. The MP10 shares the same award-winning technology as the MP40w and lets you take full control of the flow. Straight from Ecotech Marine: “With all the electrical components outside the aquarium and a variety of easy-to-program modes, the VorTech is the safest, most versatile pump on the market.” Shipping in late spring for $195. Click the link below for full information on specs and modes. Flow: 500 to 1575 gph Wattage: 8 to 18 watts Maximum Tank Thickness: 3/8″ Appropriate Tank Size Range: 2.5 to 50 gal Dimensions: Wet Side- 2.5″ diameter by 1.5″ long, Dry Side - 2.5″ diameter by 2″ long Clearance Needed Behind Aquarium: 2.25″ Feed Mode - Slows down your pump for 10 minutes to allow you to feed your aquarium. Constant Speed Mode - The pump runs at a constant speed you set based on your aquarium’s specific needs. Reef Crest Mode - Automatically simulates the high-energy conditions of a natural reef crest environment. Lagoon Mode - Automatically simulates a calmer, lagoon reef environment. Short Pulse Mode - Allows for wave pulse timings between 0.3 and two seconds, enabling the creation of FAST alternating flow throughout the tank. Long Pulse Mode - Allows for wave pulse timings of between two seconds and 60 seconds, enabling the creation of slow alternating flow throughout the tank. Night Mode - Enables the pump to operate for 14 hours in whichever mode is selected for the day and go back to Night Mode for 10 hours. Master pumps will tell their slaves to go into Night Mode as well. Pump Disconnect - Automatically shuts down the system if the wet and dry sides become separated. Now the question is, why can they sell a unit that is basically the same as the MP40, but with a smaller motor, for $200, but slap a bigger motor on it and charge $400?
I really want an MP40 but $400 is ridiculous! |

Ecotech spent considerable funds on R&D for this product, which is unique in several facets.
Like it or not, R&D dollars need to be recouped. Ecotech did this correctly by patenting the design to at least assist in staving off ChiComm clones.
Ecotech service is second to none. I damaged my MP40W control unit with water, which is not covered under warranty. They replaced the unit and sent back to me for $100.
When you start pricing out alternatives, the MP40W suddenly looks more and more attractive.
I used to run 2x Koralia Magnum 6 + 2x Koralia 3 off a Red Sea Wavemaster Pro. This setup cost quite a bit, and I didn't have NEARLY the control I have with 2x MP40W. I have an insane amount of flow and turnover in the tank, and my corals love the pulsing flow of the MP40W (set to make about a 1.5" standing wave in my 6' L tank). If Ecotech wants to introduce a pump using their own patented technology at a lower price point, I am all for it. |
