older skimmer question
i started my first reef tank in college back in early 2000. at the time, my research led me to buy a red sea berlin protein skimmer and if i recall correctly, this was the gold standard of skimmers. i know and understand that technology changes and i haven't seen anyone on this forum still using this thing. as i am beginning to put together my new tank (80 gal), i was planning on re-using this skimmer - is there a compelling reason to update my skimmer?

i would say use it to start with on the new tank. As you start to add corals and fish, take notice of your parameters. If you start to notice problems, than get a new skimmer, however, if you dont have any problems and water stays good, than wait it out untill it breaks or something. Worst case scenario you get through a couple extra months without spending the money.
