sponges in sump

do people use sponges in their sumps? does it only collect detritus and produce NO3?

I use two of the sponges in my nano cube. They are in the back chamber on both sides of my fuge. I clean them maybe twice a year, and my nitrates are undetectable, but don't tell anyone.

what about for bigger tanks like 350 with lots of life in it?
