Bleached Sebae?

Hey, is this anemone healthy?

Everything that I read says that Sebaes are grey, brown, green, but not white. So, this guy may be bleached? Any opinions?

It is hard to tell a whole lot from a picture. some "sebae" are a light brown. It looks to me like it has a bit of color to it but pictures are decieving. Is it truely white or is is tan? A white nem has expelled its zooxanthellae and is in bad shape.

I had a sabae for 2 years before I had to sell him since he was 20"+ in diameter. I started out with it just like yours. It's not necessarily "bleached" but it will darken up to a tanish hue when it's extremely healthy.

If its eating mysis or silversides and continues to stay inflated and isn't showing its insides then you shouldn't have anything to worry about.

Sorry for the confusion, but I don't own him. Just spotted the pic on ebay. I have a several quadricolors and a mag currently under MH lighting.

It's an attractive anemone, but I've learned to stay away from white.

It looks healthy, but looks can be deceiving

While I have seen worse ones, I personally would pass on that one. Shipping will be hard on it, and it is already in a weakened state.

Now if it was at an LFS, I make take a chance on it, since no shipping would be involved.

Also, if this is going to be your first anemone, would be another reason to pass on it. Mainly because would want to start off with a fully healthy one, just to give you some leeway to make a mistake or two. Not saying that you would, but there is still a learning curve with anemones, so why not start off with a nice healthy one.

If thats the ebay pic I would probably pass as well. Maybe its only a little light, maybe its very bleached... hard to say.

I believe he stated he has some BTA and a mag. THe biggest problem with sebae is I have seen 4 different species identified as "sebae" and it gets confusing.

I had two like the one in the picture. Each one lasted for about 2 months then they start flipping upside down and trying to kill themselves.

If you get a healthy one, there are fairly easy to keep. But, like I said, the key is getting a healthy one.

H. Crispa seems to be what most folks mean when they say sebae but I have seen H. Malu, M. doreensis and H. ritteri/ H. magnifica, labeled as Sebae. There is some of this with any common name but it seems that sebae is particularly often mislabeled. I don't think any of them are especially known for their hardiness, so a at least partially bleached one before a ship is a shakey proposition
