my wife was annoyed enough at my 2.5" gap stating it was too big, she'd flat deny a 5" gap.

I'd leave at least enough room to access outlets & run powerhead cords behind tank. Mine is about 2"-2 1/4". It's a struggle to access the outlets behind the stand.

if you are worried about tank gap, DIY some wood molding the same color as your stand and hood and have it run from the floor to the top of the hood. put some hinges on the inside, PRESTO instant gap hider

if your putting the stand on carpet you need to at LEAST be far enough off the wall so the carpet "tac strip" doesnt angle the stand/tank forward.

you can fill the gap any number of ways with some simple trim.

There are long handled cleaning tools available for working inside the tank. I actually let the back glass get quite grungy and don't worry about it too much. Coralline algae and even some hair algae grows there, it's a haven for pods.

+1 Mike. I've never cleaned the back or sides of my tanks. I think it looks more natural that way. I have about a 1' gap, but i run all HOB stuff.

I'd say the tank should be as far from the wall as it needs to be for your arm to fit in! You never know when you'll want to use a magnet mounted pump on the back of the tank, and it's much easier to get one into place if you can slip your arm behind the tank to hold the dry side.

Whatever you pick it won't be far enough. Soon enough you'll find a piece of equipment that won't fit through the front doors and you'll have to move the tank to get it in through the back. Just one of the laws of nature.

i have to pick and choose those battles and that wasn't one of them. i feel fortunate enough that she is moderately excited about the tank getting up and going, not going to argue about the spacing behind it

+1!!! It also helps to let her pick a few things out (with some gentle guidance) with a trip to the LFS. She will have more of a connection with those couple corals or fish, and will like to watch them grow. My wife couldn't really stand it at first, but now that corals are getting a little bigger, and some fish are in the tank she's really started liking it. She was actually the one who talked me into getting my Angler!
