Large Leather Problem!!!

Over the last week I have been watching the fingers on 2 of our leathers slowly deteriorate. It almost looks as if the finger is slowly seperating from the base of the coral and will soon be hanging on by a thread.

Heres a full tank shot, you can see the finger of the leather (dead center) has turned a darker colour and lob sided, also 2 new fingers sprouting out on each side of it.

Close ups...

Top Left Leather also losing a finger....

They almost look like cigarett burns. One problem I can think of that may be causing the issue is the 3 emerald crabs in the tank. They sleep in the leathers everynight. I've never seen them pick at them and this started just last week so I'm not positive.

Another idea was that the 2 new fingers growing were pushing off the middle one??? I don't know if this is even plausable but just a guess.

Hope you all can help!!!!

Thanks!

It is possibly fragging itself. Leathers will do this from time to time. I don't see any "damage" in the pics.

I agree --its fragging itself. Any piece you cut off you can frag and it will do fine as will the original coral.

I run a wooden tooth pick through the piece and use an elastic an either side of the tooth pick to attach it to a rock. Within a week sometimes sooner, you can remove the elastics and tooth picks and its adhered to the rock

if your afraid the emerald crabs are picking at it, start direct feeding them with dried algae and some frozen food and they wont go for any corals.
