Corals to light distance

got only 3-4 inches between a 150MH 10K over my instand frag tank. also have a couple of T8 actinics and 14k fluorescents as supplements.
how clsoe to the water surface do you think its safe to have high light loving corals of course with slow acclimation to high light levels? my upper frag rack is around 4 inches of water level which is around 7-8 inches from the halide. Was told that not having space for light to diffuse a bit can have detrimental effects on corals straight under it? is there any truth to that?
