What's a diy way to plumb a return line over the side of the tank. Just temporarily?

I use PVC 90's. Just make sure that you allow for syphening (SP?).
You can drill a small hole in the back side (facing the tank wall) to allow air to get in and break the syphen. Pull the pump plug to check and make sure that it won't overflow. Nathan

Make a "u" it will hang over the rim nicely. Use a barb fitting if going from tube. IME vinyl tubing will flatten/kink fairly quickly reducing flow significantly.

I agree with the PVC, I have also used the uplift tube from a small penguin HOB filter. Just make sure that you cut it off near the water level to avoid a siphon... You know Ill bet that most of us that are saying to make sure to avoid a siphon have had it happen to us.

I would like to put an pvc slip x insert fitting on one end and a slip 45* elbow on the tank side to direct flow up to the water's surface.

That im not sure of. I have just used them because a 1/2"-5/8" vinyl tube fits over the outside.
