Help pick Tangs to add to wish list
Need some (more) help picking the tangs for our stock list...
Here is what is currently in the tank: - Snails (Astrea, Margarita, Cerith, and Nassarius) - Cleaner Shrimp - Two Emerald Mithrax Crabs - Green Mandarin - Royal Gramma Basslet - Pair of Tomato Clowns in a Green Bubble Tip Anemone - Fox Face Rabbitfish Originally we were going to go with a Kole Yellow Eye Tang (Ctenochaetus strigosus) AND Powder Brown Tang (Acanthurus japonicas) OR Whitecheek Tang (Acanthurus nigricans); two tangs total. We have since added the Mimic Lemon Peel Tang (Acanthurus pyroferus) to the list of possible candidates to go along with the Kole Tang. The tangs will be added together to minimize aggression. Any other smaller (max size 8"), less aggressive, and hardy tangs to add to the possible candidates?

I would think one Tang in a 92G would be plenty, but that's just me.

Lol, it's almost impossible to ask about Tangs on this forum without the tang police coming in. ALL the replies were about the size of the tank...

I keep a powder blue and a kole tang and it's a great combination. The powder blues and browns are gorgeous.
(Tang cops, they both live in a 180 gallon 6X2X2. I consider that fully stocked for tangs.)

Tominis and lavenders stay on the small side. I have both and they are model citizens in my 150.

Yes, this stock list is for the AGA92 Corner.
As for the tang police, I've noticed a much more gentle approach lately. Wouldn't the Tomini Tang (Ctenochaetus tominiensis) be too close in shape and size to the Kole Tang? I think they would be agressive toward each other. But that is a nice alternative to the Kole Tang. The Lavender Tang (Acanthurus nigrofuscus) could be a consideration. Really it will come down to what we can actually buy. LFS and Canadian Online Fish Stores don't seem to get much more than the most common species; Yellow, Blue (Dori), Kole, and many other species that are way to big for a AGA92. I have a request into one of the more prominent online stores asking about the Lemon Peel Mimic. If they can get it and it's within out budget, we'll probably go for that. If it comes down to a choice between the Kole and the Lemon Peel Mimic, the Lemon Peel Mimic will win as my girlfriend really wants a Lemon Peel Angel so the Mimic will be the next best thing. (Can't have the angel as we plan on having LPS and clams.)

A chevron tang might be a consideration. Quite beautiful but can be pricey. I have a mimic tang myself and it has been a great addition. It ignores all my other fish and goes along with its daily duty of picking at algae. |

Lol no tang police here, but I just think the fox face and the mimic lemonpeel will be plenty for a corner tank.

If you are set on two tangs, try to get two that have dissimilar shapes/colors. I would get one each from two different genus/groups - Zebrasoma (like a yellow/purple/sailfin) + either Ctenochaetus (like a chevron/kole/bristletooth) or Acanthurus (powder blue/powder brown). You will probably have more success if you avoid 2 from the same group (i.e. a yellow tang would probably end up getting along better with a powder brown than a powder blue would with a powder brown).
Its worth noting (since you mention the white cheek) that they (A. nigricans) have a reputation for being less hardy, more delicate and more difficult to acclimate to a reef tank than their similar looking cousin, the powder brown (A. japonicus).
