what are the pro's/con's of doing so?

the problem is that unless you clean it at least weekly, it will become a nitrate factory. That being said, i use one on my 60g cube and have for years. it has some LR rubble in it, but is mainly used as a place to put carbon and to add a little flow. PITA to keep clean however.

Fresh water fish can tolerate nitrates.
