Media

Adding a 30 gal sump to my tank. It will have a large refugium section. Should I be running carbon as well. And any other media?

I run GFO and carbon in my sump in a dual reactor setup.

I run carbon in my cannister filter. It works well to use carbon and have a fuge. When carbon becomes exhausted it emits phosphate which the macro in the fuge consumes. Great combo to have.

i run my sump bare, and just hang a reactor for phos on it, theres lots of types of media you can use, imo carbon is a great media, try changing it out every 2 weeks to start until you get use to it

Would you just have the carbon sit in the sump or is there a device to put it in?

You can use carbon passively in a media bag - just fill a media bag with it (after rinsing) and drop it in the sump. Or, you can run actively it in a reactor, like the Two Little Fishies one. The latter is more effective since you would be forcing the water through the carbon.
