Are you using RO/DI? What kind of clean up crew do you have?

Make sure you have a lot of circulation and no phosphate. Use ro/di water if you can.

Time and the hermits will hopefully pick at it. Diatoms are single celled animals that are clumping together.

Here is a good page to bookmark;

just give it time and make sure you have good flow. every new tank ive had, have always gone through this stage. snails will also munch on the diatoms.

well what i would do is stir up the algae in the sand with a powerhead and filter it out with polishing pads. Thats what i used to do, because i heard this kind of algae is not good for your tank. make sur you turn off your main filtering system and filter out all the waste witth another filter
