REd legged crap reproducing

A few weeks ago my red legged crap appeared to have had an offspring or what appeared to be one. I thought it was molting as it had before, but apon closer inspection it appeared to me a baby crab. Only problem was there was white meat exposed on it. Momma watched it closely for a few days,,, baby didnt seem to move much and didnt attempt to get in a shell. A few days later it died. Is this commom for them? and if so should there have been what looked like white meat exposed. Relatively new to this and first time ive seen this happen. If it happens again is there anything i should do?
