how much GFO to use?

Hi there,

I got some GFO from bulk reef supply, and was going to start with the recommended "2 grams per gallon" dose, however, I do not have a scale.

So, does anybody know how much volume 100 grams would be? Would it be 50ml, 100ml, etc?

Thanks,

Tim

i have a 46 gallon sps tank, no sump, total actual water volume after factoring out live rock and sand weight is about 31 gallons. I safely use 6 tbs changed every three weeks. Hope this helps you.

Cool, did you start initially at 6Tbsp, or did you ramp up to that after a while?

Thanks,

Tim

I started at 4 and then eventually landed at 6 after I found 8 to be too much. I started to notice the growing edges of my montiporas starting to bleach out a bit. Once I scaled back to 6 they all recovered in a few days.

I noticed those white edges also. I thought it was just growth...

Start slow and work your way up. Your phosphate levels from there (very hard to tell on test kits) will give you some indication.

I've always been told / heard 1ml per gallon but ive ran as much as 3ml per gallon without problem, but I feed only frozen food and measure my phosphates with a digital meter. If you're feeding lightly and not too much frozen and don't have algae problems a much lower dose would be fine.

Depending on the species of coral you are looking at the growth can certainly be white at the edges. My white edges appeared soon after starting the gfo on corals that always had tan growing edges. I guess you would really have to observe your own animals prior to and after starting gfo. Good luck.
