Sound Right?
was at my lfs earlier, they told me the for my big move I shouldn't recure my LR. They said keep it live and than put it back after the tank is ready. I am adding a sump, with a refugium. This will contain chaeto. And I will run a phosban reactor. The man said that may help, but scarlett hermits would be good also. My purpose of adding the sump was to prevent algae probelms. He didn't seem very confident in the sump helping. Is this just the lfs workers being lfs workers, or are his thoughts actully acurate.

as long as its staying in water no need to recure. The sum in itself wont reduce algae, you need the find the source of the nutrients that the algae is feeding off. Do you use RO/DI, do you dose anything strange, what is your photoperiod and all your water parameters?

I think my canister filter right now, is the source of my nitrates. Therefore the removal of that along with the growth of chaeto, should help right?

Nope, not it you have live rock. All you need is decent circulation. A sump doesn't add filtration, in and of itself. It merely increases system volume, provides space to hide/place a heater, protein skimmer, other equipment. Some people partition the sump and use a chamber as a refugium, and some people cram addition live rock in the sump to add filtration capacity. A canaster filter is basically a bad idea, unless you are really, really diligent about cleaning it.

It sounds like not much down time for the tank and equipment. If you are only just moving the existing things into a new tank, or taking them out and moving the existing tank somewhere else, there will be no need to re-cure your rock. I'd imagine that your stuff would only be out of the display tank for a day or so? Is this correct? You say that your tank will be sitting somewhere for 6 weeks. Are you still going to have powerheads/skimmer/lighting going? The LFS is correct in that adding a sump will not eliminate algae problems that may arise. It just adds more water capacity, and gives you more options for filtration. When you do move anything around in your tank, it stirs up some detritus that settles, which may cause a spike in ammonia and nitrates, but this will only be temporary. Moving all your rock, and having your sand get stired up will cause more of a spike, but within a week I would think everything would be back to normal
