Red Mangrove Pods

A little while back I did a group buy of Red Mangrove seed pods. I just wanted to check and see how the little ones are doing? I kept 8 and have 3 growing strong with several more that look really promising. Can anyone give me a report on how theirs are doing and maybe some pics?

mangroves

I have 5 in my 22 gallon and they're doing pretty good... I'll take pictures when I get home.

Red Mangroves in my Nano

And here are the photos of the red mangroves that I got from NEFP as pods a few months ago.

They are a fun addition to the setup. Thanks!!

I acclimated them rather quickly, set in a south-facing windowsill. Then I put one in a substrate bag with live sand (that I had used in the bottom of the container in which that pod was acclimated) as you can see in the front-right of the 2nd pic. This did not seem to affect the growth of the mangrove... All of them are at about the same stage, though I did the final transition in waves (2 at a time after giving the first "trial mangrove" a go).
So in all, I'd say they appear to be hearty plants that are relatively easy to grow and they are fun to have around. Just one more thing to watch transform as it grows... plus it might help the tank a little even. Whats not to like?!

Here are mine NEFP. I have about 17 out of the 20. They are doing great as you can see. I am going to start misting them with fresh ro/di water everyday to see if that will help with the salt creep and make them grow faster.

I'll see if I can get a few pics of mine. I may be doing another group buy on these if there is enough interest...

How much were they through the group buy? I just picked 25 of them up off ebay for about $15 shipped. I'm hoping they are here in the next day or two...

does anyone else notice such a dramatic loss in their magnesium levels as i do? how do you combat that? just aggressive magnesium dosing?

9out of 10 have done really well! I'd better check my mag levels, I didn’t realize they drained mag levels so much? It would suck since 1400 plus levels help keep you free of hair algae...then so does a low nitrate level... a conundrum?

I don't check my magnesium level. My tank only has sharks in it right now. All I have noticed is that I have zero skim from my skimmer right now. I mean zero, none, nada and nothing coming from my skimmer...

ive been reading alot lately about how negligible their uptake of nutrients is in comparison to macroalgaes. basically, how inefficient they are at it in comparison.

i would like to hear more input on observations of nutrient levels (and mag levels) when growing several mangroves.

one is probably better off using chaeto/caulerpa
if they are only interested in nutrient removal...

but mangroves add a diverse touch to ones reef system
even if one adds supplements to get them to grow... like having houseplants and adding fertilizer...

but if one likes how they look
believe they can just set the mangroves in a container

or... that is they can

"set it and forget it"

iow they dont need to be a part of a marine system...
they can just sit in water much like bamboo that is commonly found around in stores

regards

which was something i was considering warren, i really am fascinated by these plants. although ive heard disturbing their roots is very stressful for them, right? and if i were to move them to a separate container, should i have them sitting in a similar depth of saltwater at all times? stagnant water is ok for them?
what would happen if i shifted them over to a potted freshwater setup over the course of several weeks?

Mr Popeil

do not know the answers to all your quests
we were once interested in plumbing a small tank into our system and adding a few mangroves up next to a window (sort of a window planter)... at that time was really interested in mangroves so 'googled' them and found about all the info i could ever want... might suggest the same if you are serious about adding these to your system.
