I want them dead, all of them dead Dead DEAD!

ok, it's my fault, I let them get away from me and now I have a 180 gallon tank full of them they grow on the glass, the sand and the rock... they do not seem to encroach on any of my corals, however it is not the look I was going for and i am afraid that they may be depleting some trace elements

this pic should give you an idea

hehe... I put those things in my soft tank, and as a result I'm not going to put any corals in there in my stony tank. Those things are great, they'll grow everywhere, even on the coraline encrusted glass! I've been tempted to toss a copperband in there to see if he'll pick at them

But yeah, they manage to "jump gaps", that's to say they can get up in the water or spawn or whatever it is to exist on rocks on the other side of the tank, you can't really isolate the buggers. And as you might guess you'll be hard pressed to have any of your sps encrusting to the rock.

It does look nice though

the SPS do get under them and encrust, they are whimpy, everything kicks the XXXX out of them

I did hear a rumor that fluke tabs would do the job

I wish I had some.

I use zoas to keep the bases of hard corals from touching each other they also stop encrusting caps to some extent...I use antheilia as a border to keep leathers and gsp from touching or climbing into hard corals.

They are probably less toxic than zoas or anthielia. I would clear patches out and mount hard corals right in with them...It might give them motivation to grow up instead of out.

I would love to have them.

They are pretty, but I can understand being sick of them if you're trying to grow other corals. If I were you I would consider selling off all the rocks that have them on it and just start over? If you try killing them you're likely to cause damage to all your other livestock too. Good Luck.

the only other flip side to having them is that they pretty much roll over and play dead when it comes to encroaching corals, they are very harmless to other corals..these are the fastest growing things I have ever seen btw

Man it does look pretty darn cool.

I think you should start another tank for your other corals & turn that into a royal fish only tank

Makes me wonder if you are losing the benefit of live rock filtration, with the mats covering all the rock.....

Would make an awesome back drop. Grow a curtain of them on your back glass and the color will give depth to the tank.

It's better that you learn to like them. It doesn't harm corals, may take some nutrition but looks very nice. Think of it like rare purple monti on rocks :-). These are hard to get rid off completely but thin it down isn't too difficult, place some big turbo snails on them and let the snails mow through them.

I don't think so, they do not grow in the dark at all, the under sides of all the rocks are barren of them

I am not sure how much of a mat they form either. When they are closed, there is space between them.

I have some and I love them. I can imagine too many would be difficult, but it's very unique! :-)

I wonder who/what would eat them?

I'd think you could find a fish or invert to eat them for you. They are very hard to get rid of 100% after you have them in large amounts. I think Kalk paste and favias work wonders on them.
