Healthy fish won't get stuck to an intake? Right...

I came home from work Wed night and my Naso was stuck to the intake of one of my Tunzes. The strainer had fallen off quite some time ago. (it doesn't fit tight) I wasn't worried about it as I have no really small fish. I had always believed that a healthy fish could never be dumb enough to get stuck on it. Well apparently Naso's are dumb enough. I know this is a healthy fish as I've had him for months and he was a good eater and very friendly. It is quite disheartening as I had QT'd 2 others only to have them die on me. I finally get a good one and this had to happen.. The moral of story is yes healthy and big (5") fish can get stuck to a powerhead intake if they are stupid.

Tangs have a habit of hiding in tight spots at night and when scared, any chance some thing spooked him?

IMO, I dont think a healthy fish can get stuck to those kind of pump intake. But I have witnessed a chromis in my tank that's been bullied by its fellow chromis for days, and just found it stuck in my tank's pump intake one morning.

I had my healthy hippo tang get stuck in my modded MJ-1200. I was there and was able to unplug the pump as soon as it got stuck though.

The lights when out and it was going to its sleeping area and went around the backside and I guess it decided it wanted to sleep under the pump instead of under the rock thats under the pump.....

you should always put a screen on of some type to make sure a fish doesnt get too close and get stuck, i have never had that happen but i have always used the screens that coem with the power heads

"Maybe

What?

"Tangs have a habit of hiding in tight spots at night and when scared, any chance some thing spooked him?"

It was during the day.

"IMO, I dont think a healthy fish can get stuck to those kind of pump intake"

This one did. There was absolutely nothing wrong with him at all. He got along well with my other fish and was never chased or anything. I QT'd him for 4 weeks before adding him. He was absolutely healthy.

"you should always put a screen on of some type to make sure a fish doesnt get too close and get stuck, i have never had that happen but i have always used the screens that coem with the power heads"

I know and I always do. This one falls off all the time and I guess I just got lazy and didn't put it back on. I've now fixed it so it can't happen again.

I hate hear that about your naso ,A healthy fish thats gets stuck to pump intake mostly likely will not get off. It's like a vacum.

Condolences about your incident.

Unfortunately, as you've discovered, healthy fish can get stuck to pump intakes. Freshwater or salt. It has happened to me more than once with more than one type of fish over the years. I currently have no uncovered pump intakes.
