ATO System

How does this work? I just attach it to my sump and attach the wire a bucket with RO water in it, because I don't have an RO machine, I buy from my LFS? Is it that simple or do I need to do more than that? And is this one a good system? http://www.drsfostersmith.com/produc...m?pcatid=20411

I have been using the JBJ ATO controller http://www.aquacave.com/detail.aspx?ID=1935 For a several months now and am verry happy with it. I use a 5 gallon bucket and a Aqua Lifter Vacum Pump http://www.aquacave.com/detail.aspx?ID=971 to top off.

Okay, I just looked into the JBJ Auto Top off system, and it seems to be what I would want for my tank. I see this diagram on Aquacave, Can someone just verify that this set up would work? Tank #1 would be my sump, and Tank #2 would be the small water tank. Now when tank 1 evaporates below the senor the pump turn on bring water from tank 2 to tank 1. Correct? But what is the point of having the sensor in tank #2?

The unit comes with two float switches. It can run in two modes, mode A uses 1 Float switch, and mode B uses 2. I run mine on mode A. The switch is mounted in the return partition of my sump, where the water level fluctuates. I use a 5 gallon bucket as my fresh water container. The pump I mentioned plugs into the controller and uses air line tubing for water transport from the bucket to the sump. The only thing you have to consider is that the water level in your fresh water container is below the lowest water level in your sump(my sump is raised higher than the bucket), and that the output line of the pump is above water in your sump so it does not create a syphon.

The sensor in tank #2 shuts off the pump if the fresh water level drops too low. It prevents the pump from running dry.

Correction on the setup. The water level in the fresh water container has to be below the output line.

Yes, that is correct. The same applies to the sump end, the output should be above the water.

Yes the watter levels are correct. But the float position in tank #2 is not.

Yes, or use it as a spare when cleaning the one in the sump. I only use one and always make sure there is enough water in the FW container.
