What exactly are the benefits of using carbon?
What are the benefits, if any, of using activated carbon in your filtration? I mean I understand that is supposed to chemically filter the water but I have also heard that it can suck some other trace elements out of the water column such as strontonium.

I wouldn't worry about carbon removing too much from the tank. It's useful in removing waste, unseen/unknown contaminants, helps keep the water clear and can remove certain medications and coral/fish related toxins.
It's best to use carbon in a media reactor to maximize surface area exposure.

Check this site for the Chemistry forum, they have some activated carbon guru's over there.
Here are a couple links that reference using GAC for reefs: http://reefkeeping.com/issues/2007-09/rhf/index.php http://www.advancedaquarist.com/2008/1/aafeature1 http://www.advancedaquarist.com/2008/2/aafeature1 |
