Scientific Name Aiptasia pallida & Aiptasia pulchella
Classification: Anthozoa Common Name: Aiptasia, Glass Anemone Description: Aiptasia are small light brown anemones of the species A. pallida and A. pulchella. The anemones are typically less than 1.5" long and frequently much smaller. They are semi-transparent, hence the common name of Glass Anemone. They are photosynthetic, but will eat things that are small enough for them to catch. The stalk is attached to a hard substrate, usually in a crevice. This allows the anemone to quickly withdraw into the hole when danger approaches. Aiptasia reproduce through the process known as pedal laceration which occurs when baby anemones develop from small bits of tissue left behind as the anemone wanders around. Good or Bad? Aiptasia anemones are BAD. A couple of anemones are not a big deal except that they quickly spread. They pack a powerful sting that can irritate or kill desirable corals and clams in the tank. Aiptasia are common pests that most hobbyists have to deal with eventually. Consider it a rite of passage in the hobby. Unfortunately, some unscrupulous or unwitting LFS will sell 'anemone rocks' which are rocks overrun with Aiptasia.

You could try to eliminate them with JOES JUICE or AIPTASIA X, if you really want the rock to stay. Careful scraping them off they can release planaria when disturbed, and basically that means spawn and within days they will have doubled or tripled, unless you scrape it out of the DT and give it a good douche in a bucket of tank water and discard the water when done

you can inject them with lots of different stuff to kill them, including:
Kalk water, lemon juice, boiling water, vinegar. After injecting them, cover where they were with a really think kalk paste (think toothpaste). It will stick around for a couple days, then dissolve away= no more aiptasia. |

yeah.. basically... I'm getting rid of this rock.. i can probably sell it back to my LFS.. my guy can get me Irin Jaya (sp?) encrusted rock.. for like $7 lb.. so i'll just swap it out for some
Not worth me scraping, injecting, etc... risking screwing up my brand new aqua-system |
